Comment by Emily Harvale on December 10, 2011 at 14:23 Thanks for that link Susan. Interesting reading. I was going to blog about whether to self-publish/e-book but have delayed it until next week. There seem to be more and more reasons to go it alone though. Your blog was very interesting.
Comment by Susan Bergen on December 10, 2011 at 1:10 Thought you guys might be interested in this story, hot off the Wall Street Journal press:
A debut novel has sold 413,000 copies arriving on best-seller lists without finding a publisher.
"The Mill River Recluse" was rejected by a dozen publishers and 100 agents, prompting the author to e-publish and market independently.

It is now attracting film, foreign and audio interest.

Comment by Francine Howarth on December 9, 2011 at 21:30 Hi Keta,
Re new Amazon deal. Yep, I've gone for it with one of my novellas. Worth giving it a try on one book to see how it goes: if at all. All my books are exclusive to Amazon.
I'd already heard Smashwords is where the pirate book printers operate - by downloading files that are easy to adapt to print, i.e. PDF etc. Not only that I wasn't that impressed with some of the formatting I'd seen in novels there. The Kindle & Mobi forma
ts looked okay, but the others left a lot to be desired.
Comment by Keta Diablo on December 8, 2011 at 21:55 paperbacks at $2.99? I didn't know that.
Today, I got an e-mail from Amazon about a new program they're starting. What won't they think of next? In this program they ask you list the book with them for 90 days exclusive. And they will sell the book on many platforms in addition to putting it in their lending library. money has now been pooled and set aside for the library program. I'm tempted. I wouldn't do it with all my books at this time, but think i might try 1 or 2 and see if they also lend more top billing or advertising for these books. We all know the money is in volume and Amazon has the audience.

Comment by Francine Howarth on December 8, 2011 at 21:06 Hi Keta,
Pricing of Kindle books does pose a bit of a problem. How cheap is cheap? When is a price too high? I have a blogging buddy who said that come Jan 1st she won't be purchasing any Kindle book under $2.99. She says authors are selling themselves cheap... But, if it's a short story I reckon 99 cents is about right. If it's a novella price according to word count seems sensible.
Though I do wonder how the big-named publishers are pushing 50,000 paperback novels on Amazon for $2.99 upwards. Gee, they must be loss leaders because I can't see any profit whatsoever from a paperback at $2.99, which in effect equates to no royalty payment for the author.

Comment by Keta Diablo on December 8, 2011 at 13:14 Morning everyone! I'm stepping into this self-pubbing thing lightly. In the next two days (depending on when Amazon can get the book up) I'll be releasing my official NEW Indie. The blurb is below and I've decided to list it at 99 cents since it's only 8,000 words. The first story is an erotic horror, the second erotic bondage, and I do mean erotic. There is romance in the second story.
This is a test. Repeat: this is a testing of the waters. I want to see what happens after I select the categories on Kindle I think apply best and also a test on the price. There has been so much posted about 99 cent books devaluing the mass market books. When the novella comes out, can I ask you all to post a little bleep about it on your blogs? Of, course I'm happy to return the favor at any time! I have a large twitter following (@ketadiablo) and a big blog following. I'd be happy to feature any and all of my new pals here on my blog when you have a new release. (ketadiablo@yahoo.com). I think a great part of this self-publishing success is cross-promoting other Indie authors.
Blessings and have a wonderful week. (blurbs below for new release - 99 cent on Kindle. Watch for author page there: Keta's Amazon Page

Comment by Emma Calin on December 8, 2011 at 12:48 Hi there Francine - thanks for starting up this group. I would love to join! I have self pubbed 2 books with a third on the way for a friend but still learning lots - especially with regards to marketing and selling the little beasties which seems to me the biggest problem. Happy to help anyone who can benefit from what little experience I have had and hope to learn a lot from everyone else too.
Best wishes
Emma
