Kate Winslet to star in film of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Titantic actress Kate Winslet is to star in a film adaptation by Kenneth Brannagh of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. The pair last worked together in Brannagh's film version of Hamlet (1996) where Winslet starred as Ophelia.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is in fact US author Mary Ann Shaffer's debut novel, and was published shortly after her death in 2008. It deals with events during the German occupation of the island of Guernsey. Shaffer took a trip to Guernsey on a whim in 1976 and became trapped there because of fog. While she was stranded she picked up a book about the Channel Islands during the Second World War and became fascinated by the subject.

Filming is due to begin in March with a release date for the film expected to be in 2013.

I've still got to read the novel! Really looking forward to this movie! I love Kenneth Branagh, and this sounds like such an interesting story. Good news.

yes - I watched that series (obviously - it had P. Glenister in it!) and really enjoyed it too.  The Guernsey Lit and Pot Peel Pie soc is well worth a read.  A most unusually structured book but once I got used to it I was simply in awe of the writer's talent.

I keep getting google alerts about this, because Mary Ann Shaffer's niece, who co-wrote it, is the very talented Annie Barrows.  If you look on Kate Winslett's fan site, the name is definitely incorrectly spelled as Annie Burrows.  You can imagine my excitement when I got a google alert saying Kate Winslett was going to appear in a film of a book by Annie Burrows....!!!!

Did anyone see Island at War? Starring the superb Philip Glenister. Really enjoyed that drama series. I haven't read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society but the occupation of the Channel Islands during WW2 has of course great potential for drama so I'll certainly be looking out for this film.
